Dean's Art Page

Dean's father taught him to draw cartoon characters when he was six years old. As an avid comic book reader and collector, he was soon drawing super heroes and villains from both the D.C. and Marvel comics lines. Later interests included building dragsters, hot rods, airplanes, and other types of model kits, and woodworking projects. Dean got a book of 101 projects for kids to build, it included plan sets, and instructions for making toys. His Dad showed him how to safely use the tools in their home's shop, and from that point on, "projects" were always a part of his life.  These subjects make an occasional appearance in his artwork today. Another big influence on his art, was his 7th and 8th grade art teacher, at Gisler intermediate school in Huntington Beach, Mr. Gary Patton. Dean found different mediums to express himself with, such as: pottery, clay sculpture, painting, sketching, and drawing portraits. Another teacher at Gisler, Mr. Gary Sutherland, introduced him to mechanical drafting, and continued his love of woodworking. More "projects" were to be completed at Edison High School in Huntington Beach. High school provided him with infinite opportunities to be creative through art, and the industrial arts classes of: machine shop, drafting, graphic arts, electronics, welding, photography, and especially woodworking. His machine shop teacher, Mr. Gary Kutcheroski, got him started on what would become the beginning of his professional career as a machinist. Dean's favorite and most gifted teacher at Edison, Mr.Gary Monji, was his woodworking teacher, and helped him along to the next stage of his career (in woodworking and design). His electronics teacher, Mr. Hugo, prepared him for his eventual later career as an electronic technician and computer engineer. But Dean still regards Gary Monji as having the biggest influence on his overall love of art.

  2. I did a "Wall Mural" in Ensenada, Mexico, back in 1978. I was a guest in their prison there. Again, my art helped me while "inside". I was "commissioned" to do the original "Viajour Del Spacio", on the walls of our community cell, in enamel, Alfresco technique on bare plaster. The results were so 3-dimensional that you would swear you could crawl around inside it.

  4. I used to carry a "bluejeans" material covered folder in seventh though tenth grade. I drew that character from the "Learn to Draw" magazine ad, called: "the Pirate". I got to know all the Artists at school from just carrying that folder. Hopefully, this Blog will help get to know a lot more of them!
